Who We Are

Call for Nominations

CNA is the national professional voice of registered nurses, supporting them in their practice and advocating for healthy public policy and a quality, publicly funded, not-for-profit health system.  

CNA is currently accepting nominations for a president-elect, who will advance to the office of president, and for two members of the CNA Committee on Nominations. Nominations may be submitted by jurisdictional, associate and individual members of CNA. The final deadline for applications is January 31, 2010.

The nominations received thus far are:

For president-elect (one position):

  • Barbara Mildon
  • Barbara Shellian

For members on the Committee on Nominations (two positions):

  • None

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

All nominees must be members in good standing of a CNA jurisdictional member.

For the position of president-elect, the nominee must be a registered nurse who has demonstrated leadership ability.

The following categories of individuals are not eligible for nomination for the position of president-elect until one year after they have completed their term of office or employment:

  • member of the Committee on Nominations;
  • jurisdictional employee; and
  • CNA employee or contractor.

For the position of member of Committee on Nominations, the nominee must be a registered nurse with a demonstrated network of contacts at the provincial/territorial or national level.

THE ROLES OF PRESIDENT-ELECT/PRESIDENT

President-elect (two-year term, 2010-2012)

  • becomes president automatically at the end of the two-year term as president-elect;
  • fulfils the responsibilities of the president if the president is absent, and assumes the presidency if the elected president is unable to complete a full term of office;
  • member of the Canadian Nurses Foundation board of directors; and
  • member of the Assessment Strategies Inc. board of directors.

President (two-year term, 2012-2014)

  • chairs meetings of the CNA Executive Committee, board of directors and annual meetings;
  • one of the two official spokespersons for CNA (along with the chief executive officer);
  • member of the Assessment Strategies Inc. board of directors; and
  • ex-officio member of all CNA committees.

Past-president (two-year term, 2014-2016)

  • chairs the CNA Committee on Nominations, but no longer serves on the CNA board.

THE ROLE OF THE COMMITTEE ON NOMINATIONS (TWO-YEAR TERM, 2010-2012)

The Committee on Nominations consists of CNA’s past-president, as chair, plus two members who are elected during the biennial convention. The committee is responsible for elected office positions (president-elect and committee members) and board-appointed positions (public representatives).

Elected Office Positions

  • requests jurisdictional, associate and individual members to nominate candidates for the president-elect and Committee on Nominations members;
  • verifies the nominations, prepares the list of candidates and submits it to CNA’s president and to each jurisdictional member;
  • presents the committee’s report and the Ticket of Nominations at the biennial convention (chair only); and
  • interprets campaign procedures and activities according to CNA policies and recommends changes to the board.

Board-appointed Positions

  • requests each jurisdictional and associate member to nominate candidates for public representatives; and
  • verifies the nominations, prepares the list of candidates and submits it to the board of directors.

HOW TO SUBMIT A NOMINATION

Jurisdictional, associate and individual members of CNA are invited to submit nominations for president-elect and the Committee on Nominations by January 31, 2010.

Please include the appropriate nomination form and required documentation, as listed on the nomination form, including:

  • consent of the nominee to serve for a two-year term, if elected;
  • a recent colour photograph of the nominee in a high-resolution electronic format;
  • the nominee’s statement, up to a maximum of 200 words, for inclusion in an issue of Canadian Nurse/infirmière canadienne and on the CNA website; and
  • a curriculum vitae or one-page biography of the nominee.

For individual nurse members only: In addition to the above, include five (5) letters of support from registered nurses who are members in good standing of a CNA jurisdictional member.
