Canadian Registered Nurse Examination
CRNE Reports & Statistics
Statistics on writers of the Canadian Registered Nurse Examination (CRNE) provide useful information about the candidates’ performances and a demographic snapshot of new nurses ready to enter the workforce. CRNE writers include Canadian-educated new graduates and internationally educated nurses seeking to be registered in Canada for the first time.
The following reports may be of particular interest to policy-makers, analysts, health human resources planners, educators and researchers.
CRNE National Reports
With the launch of the new CRNE examination blueprint and competencies in June 2010, CRNE National Reports are now available only on the basis of individual examination sittings. The latest CRNE National Reports describe all candidates who wrote the CRNE during the 2010-11 examination cycle (three writings: June 2, 2010, Oct. 6, 2010, and Feb. 2, 2011), including the top source countries of internationally educated nurses.
Summary of report contents
The CRNE National Report contains the following:
- Executive summary
- Section I: Methodology used to collect and validate the CRNE data. At the end are definitions of CRNE terminology and a glossary of statistical terms.
- Section II: National summary statistics. These statistics are separated into data on writers of the CRNE and writers of the French-language version, l’Examen d’autorisation infirmière au Canada (EAIC). The statistics include the following data:
- numbers and percentages of first-time and repeat writers by jurisdiction
- numbers and percentages of first-time and repeat writers who passed or failed the exam
- average, minimum, maximum, median and standard deviation of the scores expressed as a percentage for first-time and repeat writers
- numbers and percentages of first-time writers by location of education
- pass rates for first-time writers by location of education
- numbers of female and male first-time writers by location of education
- Section III: Categorized data on writers of the CRNE and the EAIC. This section contains the average, minimum, maximum, median and standard deviation of the scores expressed as a percentage of first-time writers only for the following categories (taken from the Blueprint for the Canadian Registered Nurse Examination June 2010 – May 2015):
- taxonomy of cognitive ability (3 categories)
- competencies (4 categories)
- health-care recipient (3 categories plus unspecified category)
- client age (5 categories)
Parts of Sections II and III are further subdivided in two groups of writers: Canadian-educated and internationally-educated.
Order the report for $40 plus applicable taxes.
CRNE Jurisdictional Reports
With the launch of the new CRNE examination blueprint and competencies in June 2010, CRNE Jurisdictional Reports are now available only on the basis of individual examination sittings.
The latest CRNE Jurisdictional Reports describe candidates in a given jurisdiction who wrote the CRNE during the 2010-11 examination cycle (three writings: June 2, 2010, Oct. 6, 2010, and Feb. 2, 2011).
Summary of report contents
As these reports may contain confidential information, they are not publicly available. To obtain a particular jurisdictional report (or information from one) you must request it directly from the regulatory body in that jurisdiction. That organization will identify what information, if any, can be shared with you.
CRNE Jurisdictional Reports contain the following:
- Section I: Methodology used to collect and validate the CRNE data. At the end are definitions of CRNE terminology and a glossary of statistical terms.
- Section II: Summary statistics on candidates writing the CRNE in the given jurisdiction. These statistics are separated into data on writers of the CRNE and writers of the French-language version, l’Examen d’autorisation infirmière au Canada (EAIC). The statistics include the following data:
- numbers and percentages of first-time and repeat writers
- numbers and percentages of first-time and repeat writers who passed or failed the exam
- numbers and percentages of first-time and repeat writers who passed or failed presented by jurisdictional nursing education program
- average, minimum, maximum, median and standard deviation of the scores expressed in percentages for first-time and repeat writers
Most of the results in Sections II and III of the Jurisdictional Reports are subdivided into three groups of writers: those educated in the given jurisdiction, other Canadian-educated and internationally-educated writers.
CRNE Nursing School Program Reports
CRNE Nursing School Program Reports describe the candidates who were educated by a particular nursing school program and who wrote the exam in a given reference period. Reports are now only available for individual examination sittings.
Summary of report contents
CRNE Nursing School Program Reports are not publicly available. Rather, they are produced solely for the respective nursing school programs, as they may contain confidential information.
Up until the spring of 2010, nursing school programs have had the option of ordering either an Examination Sitting Report (based on the results of a single examination sitting), or Examination Cycle Report (which aggregated the results from all examination sittings in a given year).
With the launch of the new CRNE examination blueprint and competencies in June 2010, CRNE Nursing School Program Reports will now be available only on the basis of individual examination sittings. This decision is based on changes associated with the launch of the new blueprint and competencies, as well as feedback collected during the 2009 Survey of Nursing Schools. If you have any questions regarding this change, please contact Peter Smith at psmith@cna-aiic.ca or 1-800-361-8404, ext. 347.
CRNE Nursing School Program Reports contain the following information:
- Section I: Methodology used to collect and validate the CRNE data. At the end are definitions of CRNE terminology and a glossary of statistical terms.
- Section II: Summary statistics on the graduates of the given nursing school program, candidates educated in that jurisdiction and other Canadian-educated first-time writers. Where applicable, statistics on the graduates are presented separately for writers of the CRNE and writers of the French-language version of the examination, l’Examen d’autorisation infirmière au Canada (EAIC). These summary statistics include the average, minimum, maximum, median and standard deviation of the scores expressed in percentages. This section also presents performance information for the following categories (taken from the Blueprint for the Canadian Registered Nurse Examination June 2010 – May 2015):
- taxonomy of cognitive ability (3 categories)
- competencies (4 categories)
- health care recipient (3 categories plus unspecified category)
- client age (5 categories)
- Section III: Statistics on first-time writers who failed. This section is included only if the number of failed candidates is sufficient according to privacy requirements (i.e., five or more failed candidates). Performance statistics on the program-educated first-time writers who failed the exam are presented alongside performance information on the program-educated writers who passed the exam. The statistics include the average, minimum, maximum, median and standard deviation of the scores expressed in percentages. This section also presents performance information by the following blueprint categories:
- taxonomy of cognitive ability (3 categories)
- competencies (4 categories)
- health-care recipient (3 categories plus unspecified category)
- client age (5 categories)

UPDATE: New Fee Structure for CRNE Nursing School Program Report Orders
With the launch of the new CRNE examination blueprint and competencies, Nursing School Program Reports are now available only on the basis of individual examination sittings. Beginning in 2011 (with the February 2011 examination sitting reports), the fee for individual examination sitting reports will be $85 plus applicable taxes. At the same time, CNA is introducing the option of an annual subscription. This new option, the fees for which are outlined below, provides an opportunity for significant savings for those who register early and place orders for multiple reports.
How does the new annual subscription work?
An annual subscription will be based on a calendar year. Subscribers will receive three examination sitting reports:1
- February (produced/mailed out in late spring);
- June (produced/mailed out in the fall); and
- October (produced/mailed out in February).
What are the advantages of signing up for this new option?
- Nursing schools that sign up for the annual subscription before the end of April each year will secure the discounted rate of $175 plus applicable taxes.
- The subscription rate includes three examination sitting reports for only $5 more than the cost of two individual reports (2 x $85 or $170).
- Annual subscribers will see their discount applied gradually, beginning with the second report.

What if I sign up but there are not enough writers for one or more examination sitting reports? Do I get a discount?
Yes. Most CRNE writers take the exam in June, and some nursing programs have only a small number of writers for the remaining two examination sittings. Reports can only be generated if there are at least five writers for any examination sitting.
- Nursing schools that register for the annual subscription (before the end of April each year) but then qualify for only two of the three sitting reports (due to insufficient number of writers for the third), will be invoiced at a total discounted rate of $140 plus applicable taxes (rather than $175).2 Even nursing school programs that ordinarily have only enough writers to qualify for two sitting reports will save ($140 for those who register, versus $85 x 2 or $170 for those who don’t).
- Nursing programs qualifying for only one of the three examination sitting reports (due to insufficient number of writers at the remaining two) will be invoiced the single examination sitting report fee of $85 plus applicable taxes.
Can I still order individual sitting reports, even if only on an ad-hoc basis?
Yes. Nursing school programs can continue to order individual examination reports.
Are free reports still offered to programs that have one or more faculty members volunteer in a CRNE development or marking activity?
Yes. As a gesture of appreciation, CNA will provide one free examination sitting report to programs from which one or more faculty members have volunteered in a CRNE development or marking activity in the previous calendar year. For example, if a nursing school program submits a request in 2011 for a report based on an examination sitting (from any year), the report will be provided free of charge if a faculty member volunteered in 2010. At the time the report is mailed out, CNA will advise whether it is being provided free or as a billable item.
Programs that register under the new annual subscription fee being launched in 2011 will benefit from additional savings if they receive more than one report, as shown in the table below3.
