Volunteer Code of Conduct
The Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) is committed to conducting its operations and business in an ethical, respectful and legal manner. Each volunteer is expected to be familiar with, and to adhere to, this code of conduct as a condition of his or her involvement in CNA business. Each volunteer shall conduct CNA business with honesty, integrity and fairness and in accordance with applicable laws.
VOLUNTEER CODE OF CONDUCT
- CONFIDENTIALITY
Some of CNA’s work is highly confidential and involves sensitive, copyrighted intellectual property. Whether in print or in conversations, I will honour the confidentiality of all board members, advisors, staff and volunteers. I will treat all working documents and information obtained during meetings and discussions as confidential unless advised otherwise. I will dispose of any confidential printed or electronic materials in an appropriate and environmentally sensitive manner.
- NON-DISCRIMINATION, EQUITY AND RESPECT
I will treat others with the same dignity, respect and professionalism with which I expect to be treated. I will behave respectfully, which includes being sensitive to cultural and religious differences as well as to differences in values, life experience and personality. I will reflect in my behaviour and communications the spirit of human rights legislation in Canada. I will treat others with dignity, care and respect. I will avoid all expressions of racism and sexism and any other forms of hurtful or discriminatory behaviour as cited in the Ontario Human Rights Code R.S.O. 1990, Chapter H.19.
- CONFLICT OF INTEREST
I will commit to understanding and upholding the CNA board of directors’ conflict of interest policy GP-9 (follows). I agree to discuss any actual, potential or perceived conflicts with my CNA contact and I commit to being truthful in all matters to do with my volunteer relationship with CNA.
- ACCOUNTABILITY
I will uphold the mission, vision and goals of CNA, as they appear on CNA’s website (www.cna-aiic.ca), at all times while I am volunteering. I will support the final decisions of CNA, whether or not I am in personal agreement with the decisions. I will be responsible, objective and reliable, ensuring relevancy and effectiveness in all of my dealings in my capacity as a CNA volunteer, whether they take place within CNA or externally. When working at CNA House, I will follow the established rules and guidelines.
- TRAINING AND CONTINUING DEVELOPMENT
I understand that by agreeing to carry out volunteer duties with CNA, I agree to undertake and complete any necessary training before and during the course of my volunteer assignment as outlined by CNA. I value my own continuing development and understand that it is essential to the successful completion of my volunteer duties.
- ALCOHOL/DRUG USE
I understand that being under the influence of alcohol or drugs may interfere with my ability to deliver service. I therefore agree not to perform my volunteer duties while under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
- SCENTS
Many people suffer from environmental allergies and are extremely sensitive to strong scents. To make CNA as comfortable as possible for all people, I agree to avoid the use of colognes and perfumes while working at CNA House or performing duties on behalf of CNA in the community.
- NON-COMPLIANCE
I understand that failure to adhere to any and all parts of this code may result in suspension from my volunteer duties or termination of my volunteer relationship with CNA.
