CNA Resolutions - June 2004
| RESOLUTION 12 | NURSING LEADERSHIP |
| To be discussed at the November 2004 meeting of the CNA Board of Directors | |
BE IT RESOLVED, That the Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) bring together interested stakeholders to identify priorities and an action plan for a national strategy to maximize the leadership potential of nurses at all levels and in all domains of practice.
Background
Although many outstanding examples of nursing leadership are evident throughout the Canadian health system, the need for increased attention to nursing leadership in the context of a quality professional practice environment has been highlighted in a number of recent reports and studies. Examples include: the report of the Commission of the Future of Health Care in Canada, the Canadian Nursing Advisory Committee report, the Academy of Canadian Executive Nurses’ Leadership Paper, and two reports commissioned by CNA – Nursing Leadership Development in Canada and Nursing Leadership: Unleashing the Power. Each of these reports has made recommendations on the need for concerted action to address nursing leadership issues. Some of the issues identified include:
- empowerment and the need for control over practice environments;
- ensuring the voice of nursing is heard within health care organizations;
- heavy workloads of direct care providers and nurse managers;
- educational preparation for nursing leadership roles;
- valuing and support for nurses in leadership positions; and
- the need for succession planning.
As the voice of the nursing profession in Canada, CNA is the most appropriate group to bring together interested stakeholders to address this important issue that affects all practice domains and all levels of nursing.
