RESOLUTION 6 INCREASING FEDERAL/PROVINCIAL/TERRITORIAL SUPPORT TO PURSUE DOCTORAL EDUCATION

(Approved)

BE IT RESOLVED, That the Canadian Nurses Association (CNA) with the support of provincial and territorial jurisdictions, lobby the federal and provincial/territorial governments for funding to enable nurses to access doctoral education in nursing.

Background

Considerable research describes the shortage of registered nurses (RNs) in Canada. Equally distressing is the shortage of nursing faculty prepared at the PhD level to educate future RNs. Canada must urgently increase the number of registered nurses pursuing doctoral education to ensure the nation will have adequate human resources to care for its residents. Barriers to accessing doctoral education include inadequate funding for students and the lack of flexibility in the delivery of education programs.
